History

This gorgeous mansion and its beautiful gardens are only about a 30 minutes drive from San Francisco. The mansion is not visible from the main road, but a small road surrounded by some fields will take you to the parking lot. Since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area and relatively close by, we have visited the magnificent Filoli Historic House & Gardens multiple times. It has been a great place to take our guests to, or just to go enjoy different seasons and flower blooms. Filoli is such a tranquil place and we find something new on each visit there.

“We were very focused on the two families who lived in the homes, and those stories are great, but there’s so many more stories here,” Newport said. In a landscape that provides so much beauty, it’s easy to be overtaken by the glory spread out before you, but Filoli is a place to take your time, do some exploring and look for the details that make the difference. Outdoor adventures abound in the Bay Area, where 10,000 miles of trails wander across more than 300 mountains, 19 state parks, eight national park units — and one very civilized, almost-Gilded Age garden.
