She told us what we would see inside, and what to look for. On this day they had an exhibition of 1920’s clothes which could be found in almost every room. The first room to see after entering the house is the Reception Hall. We exited the house and took a last look at the reflecting pool. Walking through the gardens with very few people present gave us an air of tranquility. Shops, hotels, restaurants and points of interest for the home and garden obsessed on the go.

Summer is the perfect time to attend their Summer Nights program and take in the roses and dahlias. Fall gifts visitors with a kaleidoscope of autumnal colors. But even with our soggy shoes and cold noses, wandering the gardens in the rain had a magical feel that I wasn’t prepared for. The rain splintered on the ground and refracted off the bulbs adorning the trees and bushes around us, casting sparkling light that guided us through the dark paths. The four of us emerged from the Woodland Garden, an informal area filled with camellias and staghorn ferns, and found ourselves on a paved terrace equipped with drink stands.

Visit Virtually

Filoli is an expansive landscape situated on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone. Today, this estate serves as a community cultural center open daily to the public. Spring is when the majority of flowers are blooming, including tulips, wisteria, camelias, and magnolias! They do have camellias blooming throughout the gardens, and there are a ton! The main attraction for winter is the extended nighttime hours for Holidays at Filoli. There aren’t as many flowers in fall, but the orchid is open to explore and the roses are still blooming!

History

In 1975, she donated the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and established an endowment to maintain the gardens in perpetuity. Although she had by then moved to a smaller property nearby, she returned many weekends to wander the estate’s brick walkways and leafy allées punctuated by rustic wooden benches. “She would bring sweet rolls to the gardeners and walk her dogs,” says Coonan.

What's Blooming

At Filoli we create inspiration in everyday life by welcoming all to experience the House, Garden, and natural lands. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by the protected Peninsula watershed. Every spring, Filoli plants thousands of bulbs around the House and Garden. Follow along their journey and watch their transformation from bulb to flower. Never mind that they are unfairly assigning racist motives to thousands of people protesting the killing of more than 34,000 Palestinian people, most of them women and children. It’s clear that these Republican politicians are less concerned with the wave of antiwar protests than using them for their own political ends.

They also have Orchard Days on weekends where you can learn about the harvest season while you eat and listen to live music. Vibrant tulips, blooming fruit trees, and a radiant sunset display nature’s beauty during the Golden Hour. Hike the trail at twilight or attend a free Bulb Talk with Filoli’s Interpretive staff. Connecting our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature and shared stories. San Mateo County historian Frank Stanger cited sizeable groves of redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the Laguna Creek watershed. In the area around Filoli he described two historic lumber mills.

He gained fame through his eye-catching designs and quirky personality, bolstered by his ambitions in acting, modeling, and self-promotion. He designed several homes in Los Angeles, and the destruction of one of the few that remain is part of the considerable backlash. It was most recently home to the late Hilda Rolfe, the widow of Sam Rolfe, co-creator of the series The Man from Uncle.

Most mornings he would ask to be pushed to a point at the top of the garden that commanded a panoramic view of landscaped beds, pastureland and, in the distance, Crystal Springs Lake. Agnes had preceded him in death six months earlier at age 75. Their daughter, Maud Bourn Vincent, had already succumbed, at age 45, to pneumonia, contracted during a transatlantic voyage from Europe to the United States. Lurline Roth gifts 125 acres, including the House and formal garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Filoli Estate and Nature Lands boast a variety of ecosystems within a compact area, including oak-madrone forests, redwood groves, and chaparral.

This gorgeous mansion and its beautiful gardens are only about a 30 minutes drive from San Francisco. The road zigzags in the Santa Cruz Mountains until you suddenly see the Filoli sign on the side of the road. The mansion is not visible from the main road, but a small road surrounded by some fields will take you to the parking lot. Since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area and relatively close by, we have visited the magnificent Filoli Historic House & Gardens multiple times. It has been a great place to take our guests to, or just to go enjoy different seasons and flower blooms. Filoli is such a tranquil place and we find something new on each visit there.

Local community groups take part in nature and historical education programs on-site, too. The estate stayed open for much of the pandemic, with adjusted procedures in line with state and local guidelines; the county recently lifted its indoor mask mandate for vaccinated guests, but masks are still required for unvaccinated visitors. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature.

Many families were out for Mother’s Day, including mine, and the bright colors and unhurried atmosphere made everything feel lighter. Filoli, Woodside’s historic estate has long been a holiday lights destination. But the grounds are simply spectacular, with 16 acres of formal gardens, 250 fruit trees, a vegetable garden and a daffodil meadow planted with more than 75,000 spring bulbs. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by more than 23,000 acres of the protected Peninsula watershed. To the two families who lived here, Filoli represented a desire to create a magnificent and enduring country estate. Today, Filoli’s mission is to connect our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature, and shared stories.

Although it seemed safer from earthquakes than in The City, the Bourn family constructed their house only 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The formal gardens blend two English garden styles — 18th-century Georgian gardens and the more formal English Renaissance style — and were completed in 1929. Passing through the rainbow gradient of blooms in the Rose Garden, I milled around peacefully, letting the sun warm my face and the wind blow the hem of my dress around my ankles.

The Georgian-style terraces in the Garden highlight sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their simple design is a contrast to the formal English Renaissance-style garden to the south, which features lush flower beds, yew-lined avenues, and centerpieces like the Sunken Garden. That is simply the best time to see the most flowers in bloom.

Not only are the cherry trees blooming, but also the colourful daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and blue violas are at their best. Filoli is a historical estate with 16 acres of amazingly beautiful gardens open to the public. It is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and ran and maintained by its staff with some 1,200 volunteers.

“We were very focused on the two families who lived in the homes, and those stories are great, but there’s so many more stories here,” Newport said. In a landscape that provides so much beauty, it’s easy to be overtaken by the glory spread out before you, but Filoli is a place to take your time, do some exploring and look for the details that make the difference. Outdoor adventures abound in the Bay Area, where 10,000 miles of trails wander across more than 300 mountains, 19 state parks, eight national park units — and one very civilized, almost-Gilded Age garden.
