Travel health notice information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s interactive map showing travel recommendations by destination and the CDC’s travel health notice webpage. As the director of horticulture, responsible for all the growing things at Filoli, Jim Salyards knows those grounds intimately, but one spot among the thousands whispers to him, no matter the season. Summer Nights invite visitors to explore the House and Garden in the golden hour. Indigenous Ohlone people maintain a seasonal village in the area.
A Little History
It is a great place either to start or end the garden tour. On out last visit to Filoli I wrote down some tips about what not to miss while touring the mansion and the gardens. After the passing of William and his wife, the mansion was sold to the Roth family, who kept growing the gardens and added a pool to it.
Can't Visit? Don't Worry!
The historic "Smith Mill" on Fault Creek was destroyed by fire in 1854. Pinckney's mill in "the largest gulch", which would be Spring Creek, was built in 1855 and later purchased by S. Although information on these mills is limited, they support the idea that "the area was thoroughly logged".[23] A large redwood tree remains on Laguna Creek just below the lower Filoli parking lot and on the main entrance road.

Dani adds that Filoli is also focused on providing a greater narrative around water. She explains, “Filoli’s landscape tells a broad story of California history with water as one connective thread; from Ohlone villages nestled along creek beds to the Bourn’s industrial reservoir holding San Francisco’s water supply. Visitors to the estate approach via its grand driveway and may take a self-guided tour of the mansion. The route passes through foyers, porticos, libraries and a ballroom in which they hear a lively period waltz. From the humble servants’ quarters to the elegant drawing and reception rooms, the tour is peppered with informative placards that explain how each room was used. The mansion’s opulent interiors are a window into a bygone era.
Life of a Bulb
One of the most interesting parts of the house is the staff wing. It has for example a large Kitchen where the staff would prepare all the meals for the residents and their guests. The Butler’s Pantry has a huge safe to store all the silver tableware that used to be in use. Beautiful flower arrangements are situated all over the house and of course, the flowers are all from the Filoli Gardens. We also got a tip to look down while walking, since each room has a different floor pattern. This Tiffany & Co. family sterling silverware service for 18 comes from the early 1900s.
In the winter, the bare limbs are blanketed with moss, and the hundreds of branches make it appear as if the tree is wearing a fascinator of clouds. In the spring, the tree leafs out in brilliant greens with long, dangling chartreuse seed pods that dance in the breeze. As the days move into summer, the tree offers a welcoming, embracing umbrella of shade; sitting beneath it, time seems to still. Each season the house decor gets changed out, with lots of cut flowers in spring, goards in fall, and winter wonderland holiday decor in winter.

The kitchen is the most perfect vintage-style kitchen, complete with black and white checkered floors. Many people just wear their comfy, everyday clothes though! It’s easy to do lots of walking, so comfy shoes are nice to have (but I managed in short heels on my first visit). The daffodils still look bright and happy, there are pots of flowers throughout, and food/drink trucks are in the Meadow. It can get crowded in summer as well, but not as packed as in spring. There are bright and blooming tulips and daffodils throughout the entire property, the incredible cherry blossom trees are filled with pink blossoms, and there are food trucks parked in the Meadow ready to serve you.
Tracy loves rose gardens, and I always wonder how much it will cost at the nursery when we arrive back home. (we currently have 78 roses in our garden, but there is always room for more, or so Tracy tells me). These beauties lit up like firecrackers. When I saw these boxes for Carpenter Bees, I knew we had only just begun. The gardens contain components of both English and Italian Renaissance designs. Its reflecting pool was full of water lilies with the top of the old Carriage House (now the gift shop) Clock Tower peeking out above the yew hedge. “It had to be yew,” I crooned to Tracy, who pretended not to hear me.The view out toward the hills was fairly terrific, too.
Summer is the best time to see many different roses and zinnias in bloom. The garden is definitely the main attraction, and as a plus you will get to visit the mansion too. The second floor has a research library and can be used by the members of Filoli.
Until its completion, Pratt is waiting it out with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in a $32 million estate in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood. My family’s visit to see the house decorated for Christmas and the gardens draped with lights began on an inauspicious note, at the end of a long workweek with omicron casting a growing shadow over the holiday. My soon-to-be sister-in-law joined us on a brisk December night when the rain was coming down in sheets; it was the first time I’ve ever had to psych myself up for a visit. The estate wasn’t constructed just for aesthetic beauty, though it has that in spades. It’s a working estate that hosts a nature preserve with a peaceful, mile-long trail that’s open to hikers, fruit-producing orchards and an apiary that produces honey made by bees that pollinate the lavender fields and flowers.
They also have memberships for seniors and families at discounted rates. Filoli Historic House and Garden is one of my favorite places. It feels like you just stepped into a French garden, but you’re still in California! I love it so much that I got a membership so I can visit more often and get special members-only perks. Topics vary by day and season – peek behind-the-scenes during an Architecture Talk, compare floral scents during a Rose Talk, or discuss tulip tips during a Bulb Talk. Advanced reservations required, including member admission.
My favorite part of the Walled Garden, an expansive formal area subdivided into discrete rooms just off the glass-paneled garden house, is the Wedding Place, a terraced grassy staircase where the Roths’ daughter Berenice wed in 1941. And as at many historical sites in recent years, the curators at Filoli have made an effort to spotlight the less palatable aspects of its existence, such as the discrimination and racism prevalent in its heyday. Newport, who came to Filoli in 2016 after having worked at Delaware’s Winterthur Museum, said future exhibits will be shaped by this effort to take a more nuanced look at the estate’s past. A cozy night in for me typically involves a cup of tea, a dessert and a sumptuous period drama.
Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli has been open for public tours of both the house and the gardens for almost 50 years. Today, visitors can join Saturday morning guided tours on the estate’s seven-mile network of nature trails that fan out across six native-California habitats—from redwood stands to grasslands. For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27.
Imagine my surprise when I learned there’s a historical Georgian Revival estate and garden that puts many of these screen delights to shame just south of my hometown. Perhaps you’ve only seen Filoli festooned with holiday lights or when the tulips gently wave their hellos — perhaps you’ve never found the time to stroll the estate at all. Now is always the perfect time to go, and when you do, here are 11 must-sees when visiting Filoli. In 1922, just as the gardens had been completed, Bourn suffered a severe stroke and was confined to a wheelchair.
The 0.83-acre home once featured an elaborate garden landscaped by Garrett Eckbo, and inside, offered five bedrooms and three bathrooms in a 2,770-square-foot single-story space, according to the Robb Report. To the contrary, Johnson played a key role in helping Trump try to overturn the election. Israel’s conduct in war against Hamas has eroded international support since Oct. 7 and threatens its special relationship with the United States. It was the Ohio National Guard that killed four unarmed students and wounded nine others at a rally against the Vietnam War at Kent State University in 1970. Since then, there have been uncountable examples of armed responses to nonviolent activities ending with innocent people getting hurt or killed.
Murmuring along to the Christmas songs sung much more skillfully by Ella Fitzgerald, the four of us clutched each other — and cups of mulled wine — under our umbrellas. It felt like our own pandemic-era version of a glamorous garden party — and my own cinematic moment. “Stories of Resilience,” the exhibit I saw in March, highlighted the stories of Filoli staff who faced adversity because of nationality, race or ethnicity. For example, Teikichi Taga, the estate’s Japanese butler, was forcibly relocated and incarcerated with his family in an internment camp during World War II.
